THE LORD OF THE RINGS

You may have seen the films, but have you read the book? It's enormous! The Lord of the Rings is Tolkien's most famous novel and it's more than 1200 pages long! It was so long that it was published in three volumes. It's a drak, and scary sotry about the evil Lord Sauron who is looking for a Ring tht will give him the power to control Middle Earth. The strory follows the Hobbit, Frodo Baggins, who has the Ring, and his long and dangerous journey to destroy it before Sauron finds it.

Earth Kay celebrates its 45th anniversary this year. It's an international event to protect the planet, but how can you help? Well, you can donate some money to an environmental project or decide to reduce your energy consumption. Or, simply plant a tree. In the past three years, more than 1.5 million trees have been planted in 18 countries. Each small gesture counts!

'10 deaths' on stranded Myanmar migrant boat

Myanmar migrants on a boat stranded for a week in the Andaman Sea with no food or water say 10 people have died, while some are resorting to drinking urine. The fishing boat, carrying about 350 people of the Muslim Rohingya minority, has been refused entry to Thailand. Those on board told the crew abandoned them and disabled the engine. They said the bodies of those who had died were thrown overboard. Several thousand people are still believed to be stuck in boats off the coasts of Thailand and Malaysia.

Writing unit 6: spending my time...

My name is Eva Tarrés and I'm a student in Casa Nostra school. I'm interested basically in sports. Some of my friends are into sports too. The people who I spend most time with are my mates Laia and Alba. The thing which I like best is going for a swim in the lake on a sunny day.

I don't think that the world is a bad place, although I think we could improve it if we shared things more with each other. There aren't many things that make me angry, but one thing tht annoys a lot me is when people believed top than the others.

As far as the future is concerned, it sometimes worries me that we won't have peace. I find it a bit frightening that there's always bad people in the world. I'm fairly optimistic about my own future though. In a few year time, I see myself working in a laboratory with the doctors.

Writing Unit 7: changing laws

The government plans to introduce a new law which will mean that the age to be able to drive a car will be sixteen. In my view, this would have some negative consequences.

In the first place, I believe that cars are too dangerous for young people and it can be a problem for the security of the rest of the people of the town. I think it's so much difficult to drive a car for a 16 teenager I also think that this will cause the parents too worry, because there are some irresponsible young people; so this will increase accidents.

If the government's aim is to earn more money sellin cars, I think it is the best alternative to make money because it's too dangerous for a lot of people.

Writing unit 9: an accident

Something happened a week ago when I was with my friend Carles, we were walking on the street, in front of a bank money. I was looking at the floor when suddenly I realized that there was a white letter. I pick it up and I carefully opened it. I was really surprised! There was money inside the letter! 1000€! I showed it to Carles and we didn't know what to do. We felt a bit unsure about what to do... Return the money or pick it up and left the street?

"Carles! Look! There are 1000€ inside this letter!" I said.

"Oh that's amazing! I need some money to buy a new mobile phone!" He said very happy.

"Do you think it's a good idea to pick it up?" I asked to Carles.

"Yes, I think so... Oh... Now that you mention it, it is not..." He answered me a bit sad.

"Okay, follow me, I want to return it to the bank."

In the end, Carles and I went to the bank to return the money.
